Afternoon Movie

Andrew and I went to the movies yesterday afternoon. It would be safe to say that it's been at least six months since we have seen a movie together in a theater. So, it was with some excitement and a little bit of giddiness, at least on my part, that we entered the already dark theater, armed with popcorn (made at home: cheaper and tastier and with real butter), chocolate and iced tea. We probably would have had a good time, even if the movie wasn't very good. Lucky us, though, Winter's Bone is great.

Beautifully filmed, with a haunting soundtrack, the movie takes place in poor, rural Missouri. Ree, the seventeen year-old protagonist (heroine), is searching for her father, which takes her on a journey around her community (I'm using that word without implying any of it's positive connotations). Jennifer Lawrence plays Ree with incredible depth and respect. This movie, with it's young, strong, good (and dog-loving) woman at it's center reminded me of another movie I really loved, Wendy and Lucy.

We are going to LA in a few days and have decided to make a point of seeing a few more movies while we're there (hooray for babysitting grandparents). I'll let you know if we see anything great.
